Tournament-Low 34 Helps Curtis Banksland Claim Billy Joss Open Title
The Billy Joss Open celebrated its 30th anniversary last weekend in Ulukhaktok. The tournament, played on the world's most northern nine-hole course, is always a hit!
In the men's division, Curtis Banksland gave himself a three-shot lead after shooting a tournament-low 34 in the first round of the Open. But a strong second round by Andrew Joss meant the two competitors were tied with a 73-stroke total heading into the last round.
Banksland narrowly prevailed by carding a final-round 37 to win the men's title by two strokes. What great competition!
Louise Nigiyok took home the title in the women's division, but faced stiff competition. Jane Okheena carded the lowest round among all women golfers when she shot a 50 in the second round. All three women finished within five shots - wow, that's a close one!
In the master's division, three golfers were tied after the first round but Peter Okheena picked up two strokes on the competition after the second round and never looked back.
Kolten Inuktalik finished with a 162-stroke total after three rounds to win the youth division. Impressive!
Inuvialuit Regional Corporation would like to congratulate all of the golfers that took part in this year's Billy Joss Open. And a special thank you to anyone that worked or volunteered over the course of the weekend - without you these great events in our region would not exist!
