Inherent right is recognized in international law and by the Governments of Canada and the Northwest Territories.

Inuvialuit have been discussing with Canada and the GNWT about an agreement that would cover some of the Inuvialuit inherent right to self-government. This would allow the Inuvialuit to pass laws over things like education or culture that the other governments would recognize, and provide the Inuvialuit with the money to take over some government programs in the ISR.

A Self-Government Agreement would not replace or change the IFA.
