Assistant Place Name Coordinator (Inuvik)

Closing Date

Part time – Up to 25 hours per week (Term to August 31,2022)

Over many generations, Inuvialuit have lived and travelled on their land and given names to camping places, settlements, and landmarks. These Place names help to shape and define the cultural landscape and serve as an enduring record of Inuvialuit history and heritage.

The Inuvialuit Regional Corporation (IRC) is leading the Inuvialuit Place Names Project with the objective of developing a consolidated and quality-controlled map of place names within the Inuvialuit Settlement Region (ISR). Results from the project can be used to identify key areas of consideration when assessing the potential for resource development in the ISR.

The Assistant Place Name Coordinator will provide logistic and interview support on various aspects of the Inuvialuit Place Names Project and will also receive an opportunity to learn about project management and interview methods by ‘shadowing’ the Project Coordinator.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Coordinate activities with Community Corporations and project participants in the six Inuvialuit communities (Aklavik, Tuktoyaktuk, Inuvik, Ulukhaktok, Paulatuk and Sachs Harbour) and maintain records of those communications.
  • Assist with logistical preparations (e.g., travel and event planning) for interview sessions and community visits.
  • Assist with map interviews (e.g., assist Elders, take notes, manage project equipment, etc.). NOTE: some air travel is required for this position (expenses paid).
  • Help process and maintain interview results (e.g., notes, audio recordings, maps, and related data).
  • Help process finalized Inuvialuit place name records.
  • Maintain project records and prepare progress summaries / project updates.

The ideal candidate will have the following combination of education, experience, and knowledge:

  • Grade 12 or equivalent, post-secondary diploma preferred (in-progress or completed).
  • Experience with research or engagement (preferably in culture, language, or social sciences).
  • Comfortable traveling and working with people.
  • Strong note-taking abilities (requiring speed and clarity) and good computer skills.

Skills & Additional Qualifications:

While this position is intended to provide a ‘job shadowing’ experience, applicants who already have some level of experience with interview methods and a generally friendly demeanour (given the degree of public engagement required) would be strongly considered for the position.

Deadline to apply is May 27, 2022.

Priority consideration will be given to beneficiaries of the Inuvialuit Final Agreement.
